A Fast Growing Resource Hub

Located in a region growing quickly due to the strength of its resource sectors, YXJ is an important connector for business in British Columbia’s north.

The airport has two runways and offers daily frequencies to western Canada’s regional hubs – Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary – connecting passengers to a wide range of onward destinations.

Energy efficient by design

The terminal features energy-efficient design elements, including canopies that maximize sunlight during winter months and provide shade in the summer. An innovative roof design minimizes snow accumulation.

Inspired by the region

Natural wood beams, artwork, and sculpture by Indigenous artist, and sweeping high plains vistas from large south-facing windows create a local sense of place™ in the terminal building.

Designing and Building an Award-Winning Liquid-Waste Disposal System from Scratch

Community-Based Airports Create Community-Based Solutions

Passengers often discard beverages at airport security, adding significant weight to garbage and potentially contaminating other waste streams. Diverting these liquids reduces landfill weight, but solutions vary by airport.

At North Peace, limited resources and high shipping costs made off-the-shelf systems impractical. Instead, this community-based airport designed and built a customized system.

In small, isolated communities, local airports are vital connections to family and medical care. North Peace staff, experienced in contracting, collaborated to create a liquid-waste disposal system tailored to their needs. They installed a stainless-steel bin and sink at security, with a chemical-free pump directing liquids into the drain, eliminating the need for tanks or bladders and reducing labor and safety risks.

This award-winning system also increased recyclable containers, which North Peace donated to the local Fort St. John Museum, generating approximately $6,000 in additional income annually.
